After supper, should you wish to stay up…

Casino

The Casino is not announced with fanfare. It waits beyond the snug, where candlelight meets old stone and a host knows when to explain the table—or simply leave you to enjoy it.

There has always been a late room in a good country house. Ours happens to be a casino: small enough to feel personal, polished enough for an occasion, and close enough to your room that the walk home is through familiar corridors.

The evening begins slowly. A casino host welcomes first-time guests, offers a clear introduction to the rules and finds a table to suit the pace you prefer. There is European roulette, blackjack and three card poker, with thoughtful service rather than spectacle.

A room made for conversation.

Low beams and limestone walls keep the room grounded in the house around it. Lamps pool gently over baize; beyond them, the space softens into armchairs and the quiet movement of drinks arriving from the fireside bar.

You need not be an experienced player. The house team will talk through a game without hurry, and there is never an expectation to continue. Many guests come for one table, one drink and the pleasure of seeing the house in a different mood.

For a private gathering, the smaller stone room may be reserved with its own casino host. We arrange the table, timings and supper plates beforehand, so the evening feels less like an itinerary and more like being well looked after.

And then, home upstairs.

When the casino evening is done, the back stair returns you to the softest part of the house. Water is left beside your bed, breakfast begins at eight, and tomorrow’s walk can start as late as you please.
